2010 Juno red Carept

As you know I went to Newfoundland to shoot the 2010 JUNOS. The week long festival was held in St.John's. I had a great time over the weekend, I got to see/ shoot tons of great shows including the three times i go to see the great lake swimmers. Some other shows i went to see were The Motorleague/ Alxexisonfire, Rich Aucoin, the Idlers, Ghettosocks, Hey Rosetta, Shelter with theives, the stanfields, etc. and of Course the Award show.

But before the award show come s the red carpet. This was my first experience shooting on a red carpet. It was fantastic, well organized and al around good time. There were about 15 of us shooting it. It was a lot less hectic than i first thought it would be.

All I have to say is WOW!!!!

This was definitely one my biggest highlights of the weekend. Rich KILLED it!

It was quite blurry as I was half in the bag, but I do remember at one point tin the set, he got everyone in the bar down on one knee.

Wicked good set. Sooo glad I went to the show.

Afterwards I was taling to Rich outside on the "Dick" the deck between 4 bars, where people can still drink and smoke outside. and Rich was steaming like a kettle in the cold of the night.

Billy Talent

Billy Talent played the Cunard Center in Halifax 2 weeks ago.

They played a great show and I also got to see them in St.John's at the Junos. Which ther will be another post on shortly. so stay tuned.

Venice, Italy ( My Proposal story )

While on our trip to Europe, I surprised my soon to be wife Jocelyn with a trip to Venice, Italy.

I planned the trip (flights, hotel) before we left for Europe with out her knowing, she's always said "don't buy me a ring, buy me a trip to Italy" So I did the next best thing.... both!

When I told her we were going to Venice we were sitting in a great Italian restauant we frequented while in London a pot called Carluccio's, eating some Gelato (her favorite treat) and told her that we were going to be eating the really real thing in tow days, and went on to tell her we would be in Venice for three days. she was so happy she started crying.

Our flights left at 630 in the morning. Thankfully Jon and Kendra gave us a lift to Stansted airport, as it was about a 75 pound cab ride.

The flight lasted about 3 hours. It was a beautiful flight, perfect blue skies and we could even see the mountain ranges below us.

One of the things I didn't plan out was what time the Hotel we were staying in opened up at, we arrived in Venice city at noon and the places check in time wasn't until one. So we walked around with out full packs for about an hour and a half, so we got maps and such. After we checked in we went out for a walk and snack. So we gathered the camera gear and headed out for an adventure.

We saw some amazing sites the first day/night we both wore shorts that day. We dinner at place on the main drag (and by drag I mean, walkway) at was pretty good. We had a few beer, appies, mains and split some kind of desert.

The following day we woke up just at sunrise and walked down to Saint Mark's square where we stayed for a few hours people watching, feeding the pigeons, photographing and snacking on more gelato.

We walked around all day, checked out some shopping, more food and more sights. We actually walked till we got lost. We alslo at one point got on a vaporetto, which is a "Boat transit". we enjoyed the diferent view and the rest from our feet.

The reason for going to Italy was that Jocelyn always told me not ot buy her a ring, but to buy her a trip to Italy. So I killed two birds with one stone. After our long walk we ate at a fancy restaurant. When we were finished we went outside and it began to sprinkle. We were just a few minute from Saint mark's square so we decided to go back one more time, before we left early the next morning. When we got there the big band was playing singing in the rain. Jocelyn graduated from York University with a degree in Dance (top of her class). While the video camera was filming and knowing this I asked her to do the dance that Gene Kelly does to Singing in the rain. She of course said no... So i asked her again with a pleeeease? she said no! again

I told her she wouldn't get the ring if shes didn't...
Still a No!

So I got down on....."2 knees" and babbled for a minute about how much I loved her and that she was the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Their was now a slew of people watching me and probably wondering why I looked to be begging her for something. and then She said "yes!" with tears in her eyes.

So I got off my knees and we continued walking and taking pictures. We walked till we got lost, we started noticing we were in a mostly residential area of town and actually ended up near the prison....

We got back to our hotel and........

The next morning we got up and headed back to London.

So as many of you may or may not know, I am an avid Flickr user.

Actually all of the photos that I upload here are originally from my flickr site, another great reason to use flickr ( you can upload the url of the photo to any site you want to).

I've been a member since March of 2007, and I'm a huge fan. I would be useing it much more if I didn't have my website to show clients.

I love some of the features for the site, you can track stats like a sports junkie on your photostream (the collection of all you photos you have on flickr). you can check and see how many views your photos have; for the day, week, all time etc.

Some of my stats are as follows, these are actual snap shots of my stats page.
As you can see there is tons of information to find out about.

You can organize your photos in a few great ways,
- sets ( a group of photos ) I currently have 218 sets
A great way to put up photos from say; a shoot, location, trip, day out, party etc.

- Collections ( a collection of sets) and 20 collections
Collections are a great place to put sets together, for me I use collections to keep all my; live gigs, models shoots, wedding photos, events etc.

For instance, this photo of Melissa is my most viewed photo on my photostream, with 800 views...I'm not exactly sure why this is the most viewed photo, Melissa is a beautiful lady and all, but I think I've got far better photos.
My most interesting (interestingness is the a scale of the amount of views, favorited & commented on photos) photo though, is a favorite of mine. It's a photo of a flat iron building in Toronto that i took a few years ago while on my work term for school. If you look closely, you can see bird flying near the top of the building.

My most commented on photo is one of my favorite photos of a great friend/singer/songwriter Ryan Macgrath. The photo has 113 views, 4 favorites and 17 comments. This is the photo I'm talking about.
I'll come back and write about flickr at another time with a more in-depth look at some of the other great features, such as inspiration, groups you can join, feedback, etc.

Groucho Marx Show

At NSMW this year I started a photo project, I called it The Groucho Marx Project.

I carried around two sets of Groucho disguises with me for two nights while in the town of Yarmouth. Asking people try them on for a project. In total I photographed 289 different people in them. Some of the people I got in them are Joel Plaskett, Jimmy Flynn, Charlie A'Court, Classified, Brookes Diamond and a whole slew of other Nova Scotians attending the awards weekend.

I exhibited the photos at the ECMA's (late night stage) for two nights on a digital projector looing the photos on a slideshow, The Paragon theater for one night, with 18, 12x18 foam core prints and I have a night at the Seahorse coming up in the near future, which I'll keep you posted on.

For the prints, I decided to do them mosaic style, with the program MacOsaix. I chose to do it this way so that everyone included would be on the prints in one way or another.

Thrush Hermit Reunion

I Went to the Thrush Hermit Reunion show last weekend to shoot the live gig for this weeks issue of The Coast.

Myles Deck and the fuzz opened up for them, they were AMAZING! Myles is gotta be one of the best front man in Hallifax. Super cool cat, he just soo animated, the band mates also rockin'

Just before the main event hits the stage, the sound guys go onto the stage and tear a piece of black cloth of a strucutre in the back of the stage. Once removed, the words "Rock and Roll" are on a huge neon sign, that gets lit up once the boys hit the stage. I've been a big fan of their "Clayton Park" album for quite while, and it's no secret that I'm a Plaskett fan.

Needless to say they did not, Disappoint.

The only thing I wasn't a fan of, was the price of the Thursh Hermit T-shirts, which were $25

Artist Catherine Clover

Three weeks ago I photographed Catherine for the arts story in The Coast.

She is a fantastic lady and I loved the way the photo turned out, it's actually my favorite photo I've taken for The Coast.

About me - favorite song - The Beta Band's - Dry The Rain

This is the song.

For some reason for the last five or so years, The Beta Band's song Dry The Rain has been my favorite song. I find it so inspiring and it has such a great groove/vibe to it. The band is from Edinburgh, Scotland and they were kick ass!

The song was featured in the movie High Fidelity (John Cusack) in the scene in the record store where John says (“I will now sell five copies of The Three EPs by The Beta Band”) and plays a minute or so of the song “Dry the Rain"

I'm not even sure where I heard the song for the first time, but as soon as I heard it, I knew I was a fan. Everytime I'm in a shitty mood I throw this song and SHAZAAM! I'm in a better mood!

Owen Pallet & Basia Bullat show

I first hearf of Owen Pallet while looking at Spin's LOOK AHEAD to 2010 compilation, and I've been listening to Final Fantasy for the last few weeks, trying to get into the mind of violinist Owen Pallett( the first winner of the Polaris Music Prize). His style is a unique sound compared to what I listen to regularly. It has Orchestral/symphonic sound to it. He says it's "somewhat a tribute to the video game series"

So I went to St.Mathews Church to check out the show. Not knowing exactly what to expect. When I got there the opener Basia Bulat was on the stage...WOwzers that girl has a voice! A completely unique and powerful voice. She played probably ten songs, in which she played at least 4 different instruments. When I got home, I checked out her myspace, I suggest you do the same! Her album "A heart of my own" just made the top spot on the CBC Chart.

After a brief intermission, Owen Pallet accompanied by fellow Ontarian Thomas Gill comes to the stage. I don't remember what the songs he played A) because it's been a while and B) becuase I don't listen to a lot of his stuff. But what I do remember is how amazing the show was and how glad I was that I came to the show. He has a looping machine that does samples in the background, he plays a violin and sings at the same time, it sounds as though there is a huge band playing tons of instruments.

All in all the show was fantastic, I'd give it a 8 outta 10.

Brian and Laurel's Engagement shoot

I met up with wedding clients of mine, Brian and Laurel downtown a few weeks ago to shoot there engagement photos. Joce and I are really excited to shoot there wedding this summer, as they are a great couple and we share a lot of the same interests and their wedding is at one of our favorite local restaurants The Carleton.

Wilco!...Wilco!.....Wilco!, will love you babay!

I had the pleasure of photographing Jeff Tweedy and the rest of Wilco, the other night at the Halifax Forum. All I have to say is WOW!!!!! Probably he best live show I've ever seen. nad I've seen a lot of live shows.

Opening act was Bahamas, this guy is amazing too. Really enjoyed his set and loved that he threw in a Joel Plaskett reference in to his set.

City and Color live

City and color AKA Dallas Green were in Halifax two weeks ago.They played at the Rebecca Cohen to two sold out shows.

Two hours traffic opened up for them the first night and the Olympic symphonium the following night.
I was there the for the 1st night so I got to check out Two hours traffic, which was the first time that I've seen them live. I love there album little jabs. They didn't disappoint live which was fantastic and they played all of the songs that I like by them, which was another bonus.

After they got the crowd all warmed up Dallas Green gets on stage and starts his set with one of his huge hits, coming home. Ionly got to stay for the first three songs, and didn't get to hear "sleping sickness" which is one of my favorite songs last year. But i've heard from a few sourecs that the rest of the show was fantastic and he did not disappoint.

Tegan and Sara live

Tegan and Sara were at the metro center a few weeks ago.

The sound was great and the lighting was also fantastic. Another great show put on by Sonic Concerts.

They're not really my cup of tea, but they sold a ton of tickets for this show, it was supposed to be at the Rebecca Cohen but the show sold out twice, so the moved it to the Metro Center.
I've had great feedback on the photos on flickr, having being viewed between 50 and 80 times.

2nd Coast Cover

I shot my second Coast cover a few weeks ago.
The photos were shot on location in Baddeck, Nova Scotia at the Crown Jewel Resort. With the help of President Gregor Allison and my Fiancee' Jocelyn.
The doge that were used in the shoot are real esklimo sled dogs, the closest relative of wolves. The two used on the cover were named junior and Kenzie.
Carmen Townsend is the lovely talent that is being featured, Carmen is perhaps Cape Breton's finest female singer song writer and of the coolest ladies on the planet! you haven't got a chance to see her in action check her out at a venue near you. Check her out on lastfm.

Monotonix 2.0

Telaviv, Israel's Monotonix came to Halifax last week to raise a little hell, and to tear the roof of The Paragon Theatre. The first time I saw these loonatics they were crowd surfing feom street light and playing on top of a parked van outside of Gus's Pub during HPX 09. Which can be seen here.

I got up close and personal with the band before and during there off the wall set.
I took along my video camera, which I strap to my DSLR, and shoot video while shooting still photographs.

it's not the clearest video, but for what it was and where I was standing, in the middle of a massive mosh pit) it turned out alright.

All things said and done, I've gone to a lot of shows, and nothing will probably ever compare with seeing these guys perform. I've heard worse bands athat weren't being crowd surfed while playing there instruments.

diggin through the (digital) crates

Tis the season that, I've been searching through my hard drives for oldies but goodies.

As a photographer we're trained to narrow our selections down to a few great shos and then go with one. This was what most of us do. Until we have tons of free time on our hands. I've gone through 500 of my 4,000 gigs of hard drive space and found a few that I've decided to either bring to life.

This is one of my favs that I've found so far I call it the groomsmen beatdown.

another one that I found is a model shoot session that I did at Mackenize Duncan's studio in Toronto. It was a long day with 6 models and starting at 10 in the morning and didn't leave till 1130 that night. One of the models named was Rebecca, who came with her friend Christina.

She claimed she had never modeled before, but this girl was a total pro! I got quite a few usable images of her. Here is one that I just found. Another girl from that day was Jaiah. She came with a stylist and another model friend named Naminee'. I really liked that Jaiah had this purple strip in her hair. it made for some great use of contrast in the shots.

Mr. Boo

This is our cat Sambuca AKA Sammy B, Samuel B. Uca, Boo man, bambooka, bazooka, zaboombafoo, zaboomby etc. Looking handsome as the devil is evil and those are our fish living below him. This is his current favorite spot in the house to sleep/sit.

We had the fish tank for a bout 7 moths before he even noticed it...Thought I'd share this because the cat with a million aliases, hasn't got any talk on my blogger yet and I love the little guy to death.

I actually found him in an elevator at a ex-girlfriends apartment. Since then, he's jumped out of our 6th story apartment, through a little hole in a window screen. Only to find hear him meowing from the ground, 6 floors below. He didn't even have a scratch on'm. This was when he was 2. He's 6 years old now and as squirrely as ever

Nick and Pam Horne's Wedding

September 12th, 2009 was the day Nick and Pam Decided to get hitched. The day was perfect, nice light and no rain! I joined the guys at Nick and Pam's house in Dartmouth. While Joce and our new assistant Cherakee went to Pam's parents house to photograph the girls getting ready. The entire wedding ceremony, reception was held at Hatfield farm in Hammonds Plains.We busted out the photobooth for the third time this season, everyone seemd to be having a great time in it, because I got some amazing shots out it, underneath the buffalo head.

NSMW 09

For the third year running I've gone to what I might explain as a musical wonderland meets the best drunken shenanigans you've ever imagined.

This years NSMW was in Yarmouth and it was my first time experiencing it. It has a great small town feel to it. a few bars, a bunch of restaurants and a few thrift shops that made for some descent rummaging.

I can't quite recall what exactly happened because it's been two months since I went, but I do remember a few things.

- a stack of amps in the gloryhound room.
- late night/early morning swim on the last night.
- watching Andrew white murder a few guitar solos in a room full of peeps.
- Super group! late night stage!
- Dartmouth/Yarmouth, Dartmouth/Yarmouth, Dartmouth/Yarmouth, Dartmouth/Yarmouth, Rappi Pie!
- Crystal skull vodka

- late late night room party in the Tom Fun Room

While in Yarmouth I decided to do a little side project for the festivities and photograph people in Groucho Marx disguise, you know the ones with glasses, eyebrows, huge nose and stash, what started as a few people, slowly turned into a collection of 284 people within 212 photos. I got Plaskett, Matt Mays, Jimmy Flynn, Classified and pretty much every other person that was there.

Stone Temple Pilots

Went to the Metro Center on assignment to photograph one of my favorite bands from the 90's, The Stone Temple Pilots otherwise known as STP. The three songs that I got to shoot were all awesome, they played Vasoline, Big Bang Baby and another one i didn't know. They let us stay for another song if we put our cameras away and they played Big Empty which I frikin' love. Light ing was great I'd say a 8 outta 10.

T-Pain hit up the Cunard Center a few months back.

The show was fantastically lit, and the opening acts were great too.

The most amazing part of the show was Mr.Pain, came out and I felt the bass rattling my lungs! it felt as though they were about to cave in. I've never felt that much bass.

I'm not really a fan of his music, but all in all, the first three songs that I saw from him were decent.

Recently, my girlfriend of 5 years Jocelyn and I took a 28 day vacation across the pond to the old world.

We mainly stayed in Greenwich, London with Joces best friend Kendra and her fiancee Jon. but also stayed in 2 hotels for a grand total of 7 nights in Paris and Venice.

The Air Canada flight there was fabulous, no bumps in the road at all. We landed in Heathrow to fantastic weather, friendly faces and a case of beer.

The first 2 weeks included a lot of walking, tubing, bussing, DLRing around the massive city. We also visited a few other cities outside of London including Bath, Brighton and ...

London was really cool, and we got to see so many great sights while we were there.

One of the really unfortunate things that happened once I got back was, that I lost an 8 gig card that had a lot of photos of the Brighton peer, The Lloyds buliding and the Gherkin shots on it.

Old Man Ludecke for Exclaim

This is kinda old news, but hey, it happened so I might as well share it.

This was my second exclaim assignment. I was told to photograph Chris at his home in Chester. So Joce and I roll down to Chester one early morning. Roll up in the driveway and his fantastic yard. his Wife Theresa had been painting her pottery studio, and it reminded me a lot of Chris's first album cover "Hinterland".

We took the photos in front of the studio, the field next to his yard and the wooded area in the back and they turned out fantastic. Although i still haven't seen the actual print copy of the issue of Exclaim, I've been told it looks fantastic.

One of the rooms in the house was completely covered in Rolling Stone magazine covers, Marilyn Manson posters and other photos of Rock Gods.

There was a full sized piano, a bart simpson Doll, tons of other fleamarket treasures.

Andrew and Renee' hunter's Wedding

I photographed a wedding a few months ago. The wedding was for a good friend of mine Andrew Hunter. I've done some promo shots for Andrew in the past. The wedding was in beautiful Hartland New Brunswick (home of the worlds largest covered bridge) which we saw and drove through but didn't have time to take any pics of.

My first exclaim magazine assignment

I got a call from the editor of Exclaim Magazine a month or so ago, about doing some photos of world renowned guitar player Geordie Haley. I of course said yes.

The shoot went off without a hitch and took about 25 minutes to do. We set up all his gear around him in his jam space. and I took a couple snaps and voila!

Got a chance to photograph K-OS on his "Karma" Tour.

The entire tour is a free show to all fans,and it had a bout 7 stops across the country. All he asks is that people pay what they feel the show was worth.

It's a great idea, but how the hell is he making any money?

The performance was great but I can't believe how many peeps weren't there...This guys is kinda sorta a legend in Hip Hop.

My favorite part of the show would have to be the fire guys.

But the most amazing part that I got to see was the balancing guy. he was sooo strong! He would have to be sooo strong to be able to do the things he was doing.

Paul MacCartney live in Halifax

Paul MacCartney ( THE BEATLES) was in Halifax, two weeks ago.

I had the pleasure of photographing the legend, one of only 6 photographers allowed to photograph Sir Paul on his only Canadian tour date.

The show was great and Paul played for an incredible 3 hours.

the only lt down to the show for me, being a photogrpaher is that I was only allowed to take photos from wat seemed like a mile away. I got some descent shots of him, but it was a lil' rediculous that all of the photographers had to stand sooo far away.

Sooo.... I 've never actually shot any film, so I decided to go ahead and shoot some. I used to cameras; a Yashica D Medium format camera http://www.camerapedia.org/wiki/Yashica-D and a olympus trip http://www.olympus-trip.co.uk/. I tborrowed the Yashica D from a classmate and good friend Bruce. I bought he Olypmus for 2 dollars at a salvation army.

I took both cameras to Newfoundland for ECMA's, and Ishot a bunch with the olympus, but none with the yashica. The photos taken with the yashica were in Cape Breton on a seperate weekend trek.

All of the Yashica D Photos were double exposures, but they were nice happy accidents. I especially enjoy the one at teh top of t his post.

My 1st Website is now up and running, I designed it myself with a little help from Showit Sites. I tore the templates out of it and made it look the exact way I wanted. It still needs a few tweaks, but I'm pretty happy with the way it looks. All images are full screen, unless they are a half page photo. All musicians are linked in the musicians side of the webiste. you just have to click on the microphone in the corner fo the photos.

Good times had on the rock for sure, we arrived on Thursday and didn't stop drinking till Monday when we left.

I got to go to a shit load of shows, and got to meet a lot for great peeps. I unfortunatley was too drunk to get up and photograph the town, becuase I was up till 8Am each morning.....
A few cool things I saw were, a bus shelter completely covered in snow.
- our window in our hotel room was our cooler for the weekend it was a like a freezer, because the snow was so high outside, we just opened the window and put beer in the snow!
- The ice sheets we were driving through on the ferry were stunning to look at.

My highlight for the weekend would have to be the New Brunswick stage at Whalen's Gate, I got to see Grand Theft Bus, Slate Pacific, Sleepless Nights, The Motorleague, and Share.

I got to see Het Rosetta four times and each time was better than the last, if you haven't heard of them.....You will soon

The award show was fantastic and was followed by an exceptional performance by PEI's Smothered in Hugs at the After Party.

The ride home was SHITE!!! The weather was awful and it was raining like i think I've ever seen before! Good job team Andrew Hunter & The Gatherers for getting me home alive!

The Video camera is rigged up to my Canon 40D, and produces a pretty good view of whats going on, and even better sound quality.

I was using Imovie to put the videos up, but now I just got a copy of Final Cut 5, so I'm gonna try that out and we'll see what happens.

For Many a year I've frequented the Halifax's Marquee Club.

Lots of fond memories of joy and drunkard shouting at the top of my lungs.

They recreated the Bands, The Last Waltz on Saturday the 5th of February to a ridiculously sold out night.

Coast Assignments 6

So the Coast sent me to shoot the slashfest show at Gus's Pub last weekend.

The show was an interesting experience for me, as I've never photographed at a metal show. I was the only person not wearing a black shirt, I only got moshed once; which was kinda nice.

Coast Assignments 4 & 5

I'm stoked to say that I've had my 4th and 5th Coast assignments published this week. The fourth assignment was a live shot at the Incredible Picnic last Sunday. The shot used was Al Tuck, he was wicked good!

The fifth assignment was to shoot a band by the name of Thy Flesh Consumed, the guys in the band were totally awesome and we had a hoot shooting in the Rock Garden.

I'm very excited to say that I've had my 3rd Coast Assignment. It is Published in this weeks coast and will on shelves and newsstands across Halifax for the week of August 14th till the 21st

I shot the wickedly talented Daft Punk Tribute Band, at Completely packed and energized Marquee Club on August 9th

I was hanging out with the band backstage before they hit the stage, They were super cool cats. Come to find out, half of the 9 piece band is from Halifax and the other half were from Toronto.

Second wedding of the years photos edited

So I've finally had a chance to finish editing the photos from the wedding I assisted on with Jule' in July.

The Happy couple were Debbie and Leanne Snow, the wedding took place at Inn on the Lake in Fall River, It was the first same sex marriage I had ever attended/photographed. A beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony made for a fairy tale ending for the lovely couple.
